This is a tower of two pyramids stacked on top of each other with one building block in common. Marking the elements with black and white tiles reveals an astonishing jump in pattern.
Trying to translate this effect into an one-material solution let to studies of letting them dissolve into a pattern of diagonals. These form a moiré when letting the tower rotate in front of your eyes.
