Crossover
The Crossover is a going to be one of the new concert halls in the music-hall complex Vredeburg in the city of Utrecht. The original “Muziekpaleis” was designed by Herman Herzberger. After 30 yeras of existence it is now partly being torn down and then four more concert halls are being added in a big glass-box above the existing Building.
In an 3D-urbanism every one of these is comissened to another architecture office. The Crossover is being designed by NL Architects. It is the only bastard in the building as it has to be able to host everything from a club evening, to rock-concert, a fashionshow or maybe even an afternoon of bingo. It’s funnels extend towards the facade or towards the jazz-hall. A staircase is linking it’s foyer with the pop hall. In case of a festival it can be linked to events in the other halls...
Since it is hanging (with its lowest part starting at a height of 24 meters) only connected to a core and to the facade, it ends up having a quite indirect structural system. Getting the hall suspended in mid-air, having it acoustically insulated and optemizing the people flow as well as the installations proofs to be a struggle with the engineers. I took over the Design in 2006 and developed it further to the next developing step (DO+- “Definite Design and more”) including a first set of details. Furthermore I had the art-direction for the presentation. Since we needed people to populate the images i asked all my colleagues at NL to act as a crowd while i was taking fotos from the angle that i would need for the renderings.
Currently the project has been picked up again and i’m working on it’s next phase.*
