PVC has one fascinating property:
It is thermo formable at not to high temperatures!
Point a heat-gun at it and it will turn into a leather-like soft state. After cooling down it will hold the form one last pushed it into. Since it can be
heated quite locally it is also possible to reshape just certain parts and also keep on heating and cooling them until the wanted shape is reached.
Got a too extreme shape? Heat it up again and it will release the stress and soften the form. It is the
ordinary mans glass: Once heated up one can look what forms the plastic wants to take, what is a weak shape or a strong one.
If one saws a “S” half ways into a pipe you can heat it up an fold out two leg. The length of the legs is determined by the diameter of the tube.
If you want to leave half the pipe as flesh, the leg will be half its circumference.
Since for maximum length the legs meander in each other, the legs once folded out appear to be walking…but till now rather wobbly sideways.
A concave form is reached by heating them up and pressing a cylinder into it. This adds stability!
…but now the tube is bending down a little on both ends. Heating the tube between the shoulder plates one needs to add a small dimple to get the pipe back into a straight horizontal shape.
All this operations result in a rhythmic object in-between strict geometry and fluid form.
For lighting two fluorescent lights or two spots are inserted into the pipes core. The U-shaped leg is now also is a convex reflector. The tube emits either a soft glow or becomes a sharp search light.
